and culture in Makita District
Makita District is located in the center of Suzuka City.
Long ago, Makita was a tranquil country area filled with forests.
This changed suddenly around the time Suzuka City was organized as a municipality in 1942.
Makita District has expansive areas of flat land. Consequently, numerous military facilities including the Suzuka naval arsenal were constructed in the district during World War Two. After the war, Asahi Kasei and Honda Motor moved into the sites of those military facilities. In 1963, the Suzuka Line of Kintetsu Railway was extended. Subsequently, development proceeded along main roads and the area became one of Suzuka City’s leading commercial and industrial zones. On the other hand, four shrines in Makita District are designated as Engishikinaisha (shrines listed in the Engishiki, the law codes compiled in the Heian period). Festivals in the Makita District continue as agricultural rites inherited from the Heian period.
